WHAT IS CIAN?

CIAN is the Center for Integrated Access Networks, a ten-university Engineering Research Center (ERC) funded by NSF. CIAN is working towards creating transformative optical technologies to enable an affordable faster internet for the future. See a map of our locations.

WHAT IS RET?

Tammie Bowman and Janet SchafferThe Center for Integrated Access Networks an NSF-funded Engineering-Research Center (ERC) welcomes teachers of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) into our labs during the summer to participate in research that is creating ultra-broadband communication for the next generation internet. Participants will be given consultation and financial support to obtain real hands-on research experience in optical communications, adding to their experience to be shared with their students encouraging them to pursue interests and careers in STEM topics.

CIAN aspires to create a technological revolution in internet access speeds. Teachers will conduct research in a cross-disciplinary setting collaborating with faculty, graduate students, research engineers, post-docs, and university students. By participating in a lab, research, setting teachers will gain experience essential to the encouragement of their students to learn more about and pursue STEM fields.

Research Topics may include: Optical Telecommunication, fiber optics, fiber lasers and amplifiers Nonlinear photonics and high speed optical switching Integrated optics including waveguide amplifiers, lasers, and modulators.

Potential Mentors

STIPEND

A stipend of $5,400 is provided. Additionally, a classroom supply budget of $1,500 is awarded at the successful completion of the program. Please note that housing and travel are not covered. It is recommended to select a CIAN university near your address for ease of access, See a map of our locations.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

  • STEM teacher in K-12 or community college
  • Citizen or permanent resident of the United States

 

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR APPLICATION

Letter of Recommendation from School Principal (or comparable authority) & Professional of your choice

May be mailed to CIAN in a sealed and signed envelope by the letter writers, or emailed directly by the letter writers. The Principal or equivalent authority of your institute must include in his or her letter confirmation of your position for the coming school year.
